Moment App – Results

So, my last entry was about this Moment App, which again I’ll leave you BuzzFeed’s video that made me download it in the first place.

So, my predictions were that maybe I use my iPhone around 2 hours and I pick it up from 60 to 80 times a day.

Here are the results from the 1st day. Actually downloaded the app on January 26 (Enero 26) but it was at night so I started counting from the next day.

So, it was almost the same amount I predicted... 127 minutes equal 2.12 hours, but I picked it up only 26 times... so probably some of those 26 were heavy usage pick ups haha..

I continued using the app for the following week and here are the results of the next days... why? because I thought the first day it was going to be "not very real" since I knew the app was counting my time on the phone, but by the 2nd day I totally forgot about it, and so I remembered yesterday when I was thinking about what my next entry would be about :) !

This is my week phone usage, in minutes!

So there you have it, looks like I use my phone so very much, or at least more than what i thought i would... I took out the details of one of the days with more usage in a day (duh!) with 210 minutes that equal 3.5 hours and looks like this...

Boom! 47 pick ups, still not as much as I expected... but much!

Bottom line, I'm surprised to see my results but at the same time, it figures, I mean, I do use my phone much but seeing the numbers there plain haha sort of makes me see how much of my day I spend/waste watching what's new on facebook, instagram, twitter, even BuzzFeed haha

So, lets grab some hard data from the Internet, and see if I can get some studies to tell me how the average population uses their own phone...

** UPDATE **

So, I was reading some data about cellphone usage, and I found a research from Pew Research Center, that specializes in Internet, Science and Tech about Mobile Technology. To access the full research, click here.

I'll just mention some of the facts that caught my attention. (A/N: Since I live in Mexico, this data doesn't really apply to my country, but the US is close, so for this entry's purposes I think it will suffice). Here's the interesting data:

  • As of January 2014, 90% of the American population had Cellphone, of which 58% are Smartphones.
  • 67% of cell owners find themselves checking their phone for messages, alerts or calls; even when they don't notice their phone ringing or vibrating. (Yep! I'm one of those! ... not american though...)
  • 44% of cell owners have slept with their phone next to their bed because they wanted to make sure they didn’t miss any calls, text messages, or other updates during the night.
  • Find below a table of the "most common" cell phone activities. (I must say, I do all of them in one day...)

Since tech information updates itself day by day, is difficult to know if the info I'm basing my opinion is the newest one, also, together with the fact that a cellphone/smartphone becomes something more and more important and necessary by the minute.

I found this other article by Flurry that talks about how Phones are now winning against TV for the most viewed screen, is newer than the previous one because is from November 2014 and shows how, through the years, phones have been overthrowing TV for the attention of the viewers and how big companies have decided to turn their efforts to App development to recover the lost customers (in the case of TV companies), below is shown a table from this article showing the average American phone usage from 2012 to 2014 against TV.

So, all in all average phone usage as of today (American population) is from 2 hours and 42 minutes to 2 hours 57 minutes, which roughly is 3 hours a day.

In conclusion, I'm not that bad! Even though people may say I'm in the phone too much I'm average... in the US at least! So, everything's ok now!

Experiment done, info research done, questions answered! I'm off to sleep!
